The Maharashtra government on September 1, 2026, sought an early hearing before the Supreme Court in its long-running 2004 lawsuit concerning the Karnataka-Maharashtra border dispute.
Maharashtra's counsel told a bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana, that pleadings in the case had been completed and requested that the matter be listed for hearing.
The dispute involves Maharashtra's claim over 865 Marathi-speaking villages and towns administered by Karnataka. Belagavi is central to the longstanding political and linguistic dispute, making any movement in the Supreme Court case significant for the region.
The latest development concerns Maharashtra's request for an early listing. It does not represent a Supreme Court ruling on the territorial dispute.
