A 40-year-old truck driver from Belagavi, identified as Sayyed Abbas Hussain, was killed after the truck he was driving crashed into the rear of a private bus near the new Katraj tunnel in Pune early on September 6.
According to Pune police, the truck was carrying iron angles and struck the bus at around 4am on the Katraj-Dehu Road Bypass. The impact shattered the bus windows, caused the bus to hit the road median and resulted in injuries to six passengers. The iron cargo also reportedly pierced the bus.
The bus and truck were travelling towards Mumbai from Satara. The six injured passengers were taken to a private hospital in Narhe and were later discharged after receiving primary treatment. Hussain was declared dead at the hospital.
Ambegaon police said the truck had been loaded near Bengaluru and are examining whether the vehicle lost control on the steep downhill section from the new Katraj tunnel towards Navale Bridge. Police and National Highways Authority of India personnel cleared the damaged vehicles to restore traffic movement.
The incident is being reported here because the deceased driver was a Belagavi resident; the accident itself occurred in Pune, Maharashtra.
