Belagavi Deputy Commissioner Mohammed Roshan has called for stronger efforts to eliminate child labour from sugarcane cultivation and sugar production in the district.
Roshan made the remarks on Thursday, September 10, at a workshop held at the court complex in Belagavi on preventing the use of children in sugarcane harvesting and promoting child-labour-free sugar production. He described child labour as a social problem requiring coordinated action by government departments, sugar industries and civil society.
Belagavi is one of Karnataka's major sugarcane- and sugar-producing districts. The Deputy Commissioner noted that international companies and global buyers are increasingly demanding that products entering their supply chains are free from child labour at every stage of production.
The issue has direct relevance to Belagavi's sugar economy because maintaining compliant supply chains can affect the district's ability to serve national and international markets. The workshop focused on prevention and coordination rather than announcing a specific enforcement action.
